Is Switch emulation getting really good?
Nintendo Switch emulation on Android is still in the early stages of development. However, with the best Android Nintendo Switch emulator, performance is rapidly improving. Case in point: Nintendo’s Super Mario Odyssey is already running well.
Super Mario Odyssey Android emulation
In a video uploaded to Reddit, a video of Super Mario Odyssey running on Android blew minds. Thanks to a new update to the early-in-development Nintendo Switch emulator Skyline, you can now play the game at 60fps.
The post revealed that current performance rests between 40-60fps. In comparison, earlier builds of the game would either not boot at all or would run poorly. This is a mind-blowing improvement!
Unfortunately, there’s still a lot of issues that make this far from a playable experience. As is typical with early emulators, there is a large number of graphical issues that make the game unplayable.
In the video, you can see all manner of texture and rendering issues. On Android, Super Mario Odyssey is constantly flickering. For some, these graphical issues could even be dangerous.

Despite the massive improvement in emulation speed, emulation accuracy is still not where it needs to be. Skyline’s improvements are large and fast, but they still don’t make a playable emulator in most titles.
Furthermore, it may still be years until Skyline is on the level of, say, Cita, the best 3DS emulator. When that day comes, it will be a glorious time to be an emulation fan on Android.
